CSI: Novigrad – a scenario for FAE

According to the announcement in the report from the “CSI: Novigrad” adventure, I publish its scenario, so that you can run this adventure yourselves. You can read it below or download it from here.

While I was creating the scenario, I took into account the advice from the great blog of Justin Alexander, in particular this and this text.

Player Characters:

The scenario was made for the Player Characters created by my players: Inquisitor Godfrey and Witchress Catherine, whose characters sheets are below. I also add the sorcerer Visemir of Zavada, who did not star in the original adventure, but I think he would have suited very well. You can play these or another characters, provided that they are somehow related to Anabelle Radfind – they can be her relatives, friends, confreres or investigators of her alleged connections with the Cult of the Lionheaded Spider. One of the players can roleplay Anabelle herself, if they are okay with roleplaying a character who begins the game in dimieritium manacles and about to be hanged.

Note: the text assumes knowledge of FAE terminology (e.g. what the word “mook” means in its context). FAE’s Systems Reference Document (SRD) is available for free here and the full manual for “pay what you want” here.

  • crushing glare: it can be effective to “soften” the characters that are interrogated by him as a witness or suspect, but it can be troublesome in other social situations

  • all who are not lucky enough to be sorcerers deserve compassion and forbearance

  • Glory of the Chapter of Sorcerers: +2 to Flashy creating an advantage or overcoming when speaking in honor of the Chapter or talking about the sorcerers’ ethos.
  • Staff of Storms: +2 to Forceful actions when trying to influence the weather.
  • Once per session, he can summon a storm that only he can control.

  • Trouble: has weak spot for art and poetry;

  • Weapons covered with Hanged Man’s Venom [after getting any wound the Player Character has to roll for overcome, the fail means additional wound]

  • Devil’s Puffball (sprays a cloud of poison)
  • Dragon’s Dream (detonation releases a cloud of flammable gas. Ignition of the cloud causes an explosion that hurts everyone within the reach)

Note: the golem has two main tasks: guarding the laboratory and dropping the bodies of the victims of Reynold’s experiments through the trapdoor in the laboratory floor to the zeugl to eat them.

Note: they follow Gerhard’s orders, but their attitude towards him is a mixture of fear and loathing, so they will not be eager to die for him. They can be convinced to turn against Gerhard and become Player Characters’ allies.

Guards “for special tasks” (corrupt guards) [Group of 4 Mooks]

Skilled (+2) at: interrogating, patrolling, murdering people in a way that appears to be a suicide or an accident

Bad (-2) at: resisting corruption proposals

  • High Concept: depraved and morbidly ambitious sorcerer;
  • Trouble: sadist;
  • Excellent gynecologist, valued among the patricians (thanks to the knowledge gained during his experiments);
  • Uses a lot of perfumes (to hide the stench of blood and sweat).

Introduction

The City Guard of the Free City of Novigrad received denunciations that the sorceress Anabelle Radfind belongs to the Cult of the Lionheaded Spider (forbidden worship, human sacrifices). During the search of her house, the statuette of the Lionheaded Spider was found. Anabelle was arrested and put in in dimeritium manacles (in which she cannot use magic).

The exact course of events preceding the start of the actual game depends on who the Player Characters are. It may be similar to the events described in the session report. In any case, the introduction will end when the Player Characters discover that four guards are trying to hang Anabelle in her cell on her own shawl (they want to make it seem as a suicide). This guarantees the dynamic start of the game.

What will happen later? It depends on the players’ decisions and the rolls results.

Possible Player Characters actions and their results:

(Numbers do not impose the sequence of events during the session in any way, they are just to keep some order in the notes.)

  1. If the Player Characters ask low-born inhabitants of Novigrad (including guards) for news,
    • they will find out that low-born women, especially young ones, have been disappearing recently. Others women are afraid to move around the city alone.
  2. If the Player Characters will look for job or look at notice boards,
    • they will find out that several sewer workers have disappeared recently in the sewers under The Bits district, so their Guild set a reward for identifying and getting rid of the cause.
  3. If the Player Characters search the sewers under The Bits district,
    • they will find the zeugl (hidden zeugl can sense them first and attack by surprise). After defeating him, they will notice the trapdoor over its lair and many corpses in its guts.
  4. If the Player Characters look closely at the corpses in the zeugl’s entrails, they will notice that
    • there are much more corpses than missing sewer workers;
    • most of the corpses used to be young women.
  5. If the Player Characters go through the trapdoor over the zeugl’s lair,
    • they will emerge in an underground laboratory guarded by a golem, where Reynold conducts inhuman experiments on kidnapped women.
  6. If the Player Characters interrogate Anabelle,
    • they will learn that Anabelle suspects Reynold (his knowledge of gynecology is unnaturally vast).
  7. If the Player Characters interrogate any of the guards,
    • they will learn that Gerhard has four trusted guards for “special tasks” (i.e. corrupt guards);
  8. If the Player Characters interrogate any of the corrupt guards,
    • they will learn that Gerhard ordered the corrupt guards to kill Anabelle and make it seem as a suicide.
  9. If the Player Characters interrogate Gerhard, they will learn that:
    • Gerhard ordered the corrupt guards to kill Anabelle and make it seem as a suicide.
    • Reynold pays Gerhard for various favors.
    • Alonso pays Gerhard for various favors.
    • Reynold wrote a denunciation on Anabelle.
  10. If the Player Characters search the barracks of the City Guard, they will find
    • denunciation on Anabelle (if they compare its handwriting with Reynold’s handwriting, it will become clear that he wrote it).
    • Anabelle’s staff.
  11. If the Player Characters interrogate Reynold, they will learn that:
    • Anabelle suspects Reynold (his knowledge of gynecology is unnaturally vast. That’s why he decided to get rid of her by framing her into heresy).
    • Reynold pays Gerhard for various favors.
    • Reynold wrote a denunciation on Anabelle.
    • Reynold tossed Anabelle the statuette of the Lionheaded Spider during a social visit to her home.
    • Alonso’s thugs kidnap low-born women and carry them to the abandoned house in The Bits district.
    • In the basement of this house there is a laboratory in which Reynold conducts his experiments.
    • The laboratory is guarded by a golem (Reynold will reveal this information only if his will is totally broken – otherwise he will keep it for himself, in the hope that the golem will kill the Player Characters if they get into the laboratory).
  12. If the Player Characters search Reynold’s mansion,
    • they will learn about the existence and location of the abandoned house in The Bits district.
  13. If the Player Characters discreetly observe Reynold’s mansion,
    • they will notice that at night he leaves the house and goes to the abandoned house in The Bits district. Player Characters can also follow the scent of Reynold’s perfume, which stays in the air for some time after his passage.
  14. If the Player Characters interrogate any of Alonso’s thugs,
    • they will learn that Alonso’s thugs kidnap low-born women and bring them to the abandoned house in The Bits district.
  15. If the Player Characters interrogate Alonso, they will learn that:
    • Alonso pays Gerhard for various favors.
    • Alonso’s thugs kidnap low-born women and bring them to the abandoned house in The Bits district.
  16. If the Player Characters carefully search the abandoned house in The Bits district, they will notice that:
    • in the floor of the house there is a hidden entrance to an underground laboratory guarded by a golem, where Reynold conducts inhuman experiments on kidnapped women. In the laboratory floor there is a trapdoor, and directly below it – the zeugl’s lair.

Of course, the above list of potential actions of the Player Characters is not closed – if the players have any other idea, the Game Master will have to improvise.

Emergency solution no. 1 (if players have no idea what to do): Player Characters will encounter Alonso’s thugs attempting to kidnap another woman – interrogation of any of the thugs will reveal that they were to bring the victim to the abandoned house in The Bits district.

Emergency solution no. 2 (if players still have no idea what to do): Player Characters will be attacked by the assassins – interrogation of any of the assassins will reveal that they were hired by Reynold (who fears that Player Characters are close to uncover his activity and decides to eliminate the Player Characters).
